~ What This Fellowship Truly Gave Me ~

I first came across the Conceptual Orthopedics Fellowship and felt compelled to apply, a decision that has truly shaped my journey as an orthopedic surgeon. The fellowship, under the mentorship of Dr. Harpreet Singh and Dr. Apurv Mehra, has been a transformative experience in every sense.

During my time here, I developed three core strengths that define my practice today: teaching, patient care, and hands-on surgical expertise. True to the philosophy of Conceptual Orthopedics — “Learning Never Ends” — the program continuously challenges and refines your understanding.

Academically, I had the privilege of learning from some of the most respected names in orthopedics, including Prof. Dr. S.M. Tuli, Prof. Dr. V.B. Bhasin, Prof. Dr. Anil Dhal, Prof. Dr. Sudhir Kumar, Prof. Dr. Ravinder Dimri, and trauma expert Prof. Dr. Shailesh Pai. Being mentored by such distinguished faculty was both inspiring and deeply enriching.

The fellowship also provides access to a wide array of academic courses, where active participation is strongly encouraged. These courses bridge the gap between theory and practice. For example, during specialized hand courses, I gained hands-on experience in procedures like artery repair and nerve repair, skills I had neither explored in depth nor performed before.

Coming from a government hospital background, I was used to managing a high patient load, where time per patient was often limited. This fellowship completely reshaped that approach. I learned the true essence of patient-centered care, how to communicate effectively, address concerns with empathy, and build lasting trust. Much of this learning came from observing Dr. Apurv Mehra, who embodies not just surgical excellence but also genuine compassion. His ability to connect with patients and ease their anxieties is truly remarkable.

Equally impactful was the hands-on surgical exposure. Unlike many programs that focus on observation, this fellowship emphasizes real operative experience. To date, I have independently performed approximately 35–40 total knee replacement (TKR) procedures. I also gained extensive experience in knee and shoulder arthroscopy. Before joining, I had no exposure to shoulder arthroscopy, but during the fellowship, I learned diagnostic arthroscopy, rotator cuff repair, and Bankart repair. Under Dr. Harpreet Singh’s guidance, even complex procedures became structured, approachable, and easier to understand.

This fellowship is ideal for those who are serious about mastering surgical skills. Be prepared for intense learning, long hours, and high expectations

One Tip: Stay proactive, observe deeply, ask questions, and take initiative in OT. That’s where the real learning happens. This fellowship is not just a training program,it is a career-defining experience. For anyone looking for true hands-on surgical exposure, strong mentorship, and rapid professional growth, this is one of the most impactful fellowships to be part of.

I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to the entire Conceptual Orthopedics team. A special thanks to Chetan Sir, whose constant support ensures that every aspect of a fellow’s routine and well-being is taken care of seamlessly.

Above all, I am deeply thankful to Dr. Harpreet Singh and Dr. Apurv Mehra for giving me the opportunity to be a part of this incredible journey, one that has not only enhanced my skills but also transformed the way I approach orthopedics.
