~ What This Fellowship Truly Gave Me ~

I had the privilege of completing a one-year fellowship in Conceptual Orthopedics in Delhi under the mentorship of Dr. Harpreet Singh and Dr. Apurv Mehra. The learning environment they have cultivated is truly exceptional, one that not only sharpens surgical skills but also deepens the understanding of patient-centered care.

At Vidya Jeevan, I was part of a highly structured and academically rich clinical setup. OPDs were conducted alongside both mentors, offering continuous learning through real-time patient interactions. I also had the opportunity to operate in a well-equipped OT at Max Hospital and attend OPDs at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Patparganj. One of the most valuable lessons I learned during this fellowship was simple yet profound: patient care always comes before treatment. It is an approach that seamlessly blends clinical expertise with empathy, communication, and trust-building.

During this journey, I developed strong patient counselling skills, learning how to reassure patients, build their confidence, and ensure they feel safe and understood. This fellowship transformed my perspective on orthopedics: it is not just about surgical precision, but about holistic patient management, including meticulous pre-operative planning and attentive post-operative care.

Under the guidance of Dr. Apurv Mehra, I gained extensive experience in total knee replacement surgeries, including robotic-assisted procedures. Dr. Harpreet Singh played a pivotal role in training us in shoulder arthroscopy. We were also given independent opportunities to perform shoulder arthroscopy and robotic total knee replacements, which significantly boosted both my confidence and surgical competence.

The fellowship demands discipline and dedication. Days often began as early as 5:00 AM in the OT, followed by OPDs, academic discussions, ward rounds, and occasional evening clinics. It is a rigorous program that requires complete commitment, but the rewards, in terms of knowledge, skill, and personal growth, are truly invaluable.

Being among the early fellows of this program, I was fortunate to gain diverse exposure across knee arthroscopy, shoulder arthroscopy, joint replacement, and trauma surgeries. I also had the opportunity to observe and assist in spine surgeries alongside leading neurosurgeons in Delhi, further broadening my clinical outlook.

Another standout aspect of this fellowship is access to the distinguished faculty of Conceptual Orthopaedics. Their constant guidance and willingness to clarify doubts make them an enduring source of support and inspiration throughout the journey.

For me, Dr. Apurv Mehra has been more than a mentor, he has been a true guru. He has instilled in me the values of empathy, compassion, and excellence in patient care, along with advanced surgical skills in shoulder arthroscopy and upper limb procedures.

I wholeheartedly recommend this fellowship to anyone seeking not just technical expertise, but a complete transformation in their approach to orthopedics.
